Medicare benefits should not be cut as part of a deal to raise the debt ceiling, Senate Democrats said on Tuesday. Senator Chuck Schumer of New York criticized Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell for his strict stance on Medicare after the top Republican senator said he will only support a final debt ceiling deal if it makes changes to the program.
Only McConnell and five other senate republicans voted in support of the budget plan written by Representative Paul Ryan. Republicans have already stated that raising taxes or ending subsidies can not be part of the deal to raise the debt limit. The Treasury Department guesses it should be completed by August 2nd.
Senator Chuck Schumer stated, "We have to preserve Medicare in its current form, also we will not allow budget cuts to the seniors' benefits." Without cuts to Medicare the big question still lurks, how can they reach the final figure of the budget.
